What inspired you to become an artist?

I am (continuously) doing 2 projects. White and black. I want to have fun communicating with people through my white works. But black is different. I want to make people uncomfortable with them. My works are horizontal and vertical in nature. When I was 20 years old, I took my first regular job, but in my spare time I began to design characters. From that I thought I could do it better than others. After drawing characters for 4 years, I felt a little tired, therefore I started to work on planning products for my company. I discovered my ability to illustrate, so combined with character design I felt they worked good together. I am still looking for references and studying my favorite pictures too. I'm still working on becoming a thoughtful artist. I want to find out what compromise (there) is between natural and unnatural things.

How would you describe your art?

Much to my regret I haven’t trained or learned professionally. I am now making my own color philosophy. “...make colors look like one color even though (I have) used...many." If horizontal and vertical are (constant) I want to tip and crush them.

What do you plan to release this upcoming year?

I have an interest in ancient culture. I just self study about history and religion. Ancient cultures have many stories. They're fantastic! Better than Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings. You know Islamic stories? Hanuman, Ganesha, and Nagasin, etc... This years focus is on the East and West in the past time

Kult Book Exhibition - Part 2

Artists, designers, illustrators and photographers from around the world have been tasked to re-design the covers of books that have influenced them. A few creatives from Asia tell Indesignlive.asia about their entries.

Sakiroo (Korea) – Principled Centered Leadership (top image)

To be frank, I never read a book until I was 20. Perhaps I didn't like reading books before but that changed after reading Principle Centered Leadership. Of course, this is not a book about art or design; it is a self-development book. The book made me realise the importance of humanity. Naturally this enlightenment made me think about artwork and philosophy. I admire Stephen Covey. He showed me what I had to do for the future, almost like a religion. The book title is Principle Centered Leadership so I portrayed him as the centre of the universe between the sun and the moon. The Korean book cover was a portrait of him, so I just expressed the book cover in portrait style.

이번 Designer Books에서 출판된 Fantastic Illustration은 겉표지를 벨벳으로 만든 고급 하드커버로 제작되었습니다.
세계 각국의 일러스트레이터 혹은 캐릭터 디자이너들의 작품이 수록되어있습니다.

꽤 두께감이 있도록 많은 작품들이 수록되어있습니다.

다양한 제 작품도 수록되어있습니다.

Sakiroo Choi Pays Grotesque Homage To Norman Rockwell And Puts Lemon Heads On Everyone

Sakiroo Choi takes Norman Rockwell's classic Saturday Evening Post paintings and pulls at their rubbery masks, stretching them into unexpected cartoon tributes. That's when he isn't outfitting presidents, artists, fictional characters and celebrities with blazers, braces and giant lemon heads, or blending athlete animals with superheroes and villains.

Choi's art blends portraiture, cartooning, classic art from around the world, and surreal studies in shape and color. While his Behance profile shows an impressively varied illustration portfolio, he clearly has his obsessions: braces, lemons, world art and character design, all of which feature prominently in his Yellow Lemon project, in which he takes celebrities, historical figures and fictional characters and dresses each one in a blazer and gives him a lemon head and a devious brace-filled grin. There's a certain uniformity to the characters, but at the same time, there's no question as to which lemon-headed figure Choi means to portray.

ROCK IT :: AS GRANDES PARCERIAS MUSICAIS POR POL & SAKIROO CHOI

Já parou para pensar quais foram as grandes parcerias na música? Os artistas Pol e Sakiroo Choi pensaram.

Depois de alguns meses de trabalho conjunto, Sakiroo e Pol completaram seu primeiro projeto colaborativo, intitulado

“ROCK IT“, que traz a própria percepção do que eles acreditam ser alguns dos maiores momentos de colaboração na música das últimas décadas.

A escolha de artistas não foi nada fraca e inclui nomes como Bob Dylan/Johnny Cash, David Bowie/Freddy Mercury, entre outros.

Os artistas Sakiroo e Pol, depois de alguns meses trabalhando juntos, concluíram o projeto chamado “Rock It”, onde ambos trouxeram um pouco de sua perspectiva sobre quais eles acreditam ser as melhores parcerias nas músicas nas últimas décadas.

Depois de completar as imagens o projeto cresceu para algo maior e foram adicionados mais oito artistas de cada país para realizarem o Art Show “According To Them”. Tudo poderá ser visto depois nos mini documentários que serão realizados pela Meta Cosmos e Carma Cobra.

Illustration.Files: According To Them (East Meet West)

I have been following Sakiroo Choi’s for quite some time now and his humorous illustrations always put a smile on my face (The series he did on different fashion brands was funny). This time around, he has collaborated with Jean Paul Egred, an illustrator based in Columbia, to produce this amazing collaboration project.

This project features some of the best musician collaborations in the last few decades and it includes Freddy Mercury & David Bowie, Michael Jackson & Eddie Van Halen. I really like the composition and both illustrators have successfully captured the characteristic of each musician. In case you cannot identify which musician is illustrated by which illustrator, the bird nose musicians are by Jean Paul Egred and the others are by Sakiroo Choi. I am little surprised Rihanna, Coldplay and Madonna are included in this series. Perhaps in the future?

When we think “Best of Both Worlds” we usually think of a singer from Chicago and a rapper from Brooklyn joining forces but now artists Pol & Sakiroo Choi have come together to give us their take on the greatest musical collaborations in modern history with their collaborative art project “Rock It.”

Collaborators like MJ and Eddie Van Halen, and Run-DMC and Aerosmith get the caricature treatment and end up with beaks, braces and severed limbs. Check out some of the work below:

“East! Meet West” es la premisa bajo la cual se desarrollará “ACCORDING TO THEM”, un proyecto gestionado y curado por Jean Paul Egred (Col), Armando Mesías (Col), junto a Sakiroo Choi (Cor) que busca unir artistas coreanos y colombianos por medio de la interpretación de los iconos populares de cada país. Estuvimos charlando con Armando, uno de los curadores y nos contó lo siguiente

BCOD: Contános de dónde surgió la idea de realizar la muestra y cómo se realizará.

Armando Mesías: La idea de realizar la muestra surge de el trabajo de colaboraciones que Jean Paul Egred (Pol) lleva realizando hace un tiempo con el artista coreano Sakiroo Choi, quienes empezaron a visionar el sueño de realizar una muestra colombo-coreana. Aprovechando la coyuntura que provocó la exposición LOS VISITANTES en México D.F. el pasado septiembre organizamos con Felipe Bedoya (Doya!) para continuar en la línea de exposiciones internacionales de iniciativa colombiana.

Se comenzó con una convocatoria cerrada para elegir artistas emergentes con menos de 5 años de trayectoria, que agremiara, al igual que en los visitantes, disciplinas de arte tradicional y no tradicional que van desde la pintura, el tatuaje, la ilustración, el arte digital, y el arte urbano. El proyecto se logro traer a la realidad y madurar de tal modo que se estará realizando entre el 6 y el 9 de diciembre en Wynnwood, Miami, en el marco de una de las ferias de arte más importantes del mundo, el Art Basel.

Los artistas que participarán en un principio serán:

Colombia y Corea del Sur unidas por el arte en 'According to Them'

"El este conoce al oeste". Esta es la premisa que logra reunir a más de 20 destacados artistas emergentes de Colombia y Corea del Sur, dos naciones que han encontrado un punto en común: la cultura popular occidental.

Es precisamente Estados Unidos, la cuna de las manifestaciones de dicha cultura, el espacio neutral para encontrarse y generar un diálogo respecto al país de sus contrapartes a partir de la interpretación y representación de sus íconos populares.

According to Them es un proyecto gestionado y curado independientemente por Jean Paul Egred (Col), Armando Mesías (Col), junto a Sakiroo Choi (Cor). Un primer esfuerzo por estrechar lazos y acortar distancias entre Oriente y Occidente a partir de la nuevas manifestaciones del arte alternativo, incorporando disciplinas que van desde la fotografía, la pintura, la ilustración y los juguetes de papel, hasta el tatuaje y el arte urbano a través de artistas cuyas edades oscilan entre los 20 y los 27 años, y que trabajan con la premisa de llevar sus declaraciones artísticas personales a diferentes confines del mundo.

La exhibición

According to Them se llevará a cabo del 6 al 9 de diciembre en Wynnwood (distrito artístico de Miami) en el marco del Art Basel, una de las ferias de arte más importantes del mundo en la actualidad.

A cada artista se le asignó un ícono popular del otro país, a partir del cuál desarrolló una pieza gráfica en la técnica de su elección dónde nos presenta su interpretación.

Todo esto toma lugar en el contexto de una serie de exhibiciones internacionales de iniciativa colombiana que comenzó con “LOS VISITANTES“, un show que presentó piezas de 36 artistas visuales colombianos durante el pasado septiembre en México D.F.

Extras

Además de la exhibición de las obras, se propone realizar un evento social que involucre la venta de “prints“ y productos de arte, DJ set, y que cuente con la intervención en vivo de un mural por parte de 3 de los artistas invitados (Armando Mesías / Jean Paul Egred / Sakiroo Choi).

Sakiroo — Sang Hyun Choi

Sakiroo, also known by his real name Sang Hyun Choi, is a South Korean character designer who makes a living both as a freelance and as a representative of Sakiroo Pictures. His unique style combines a use of bold colour with precise lines and brilliant lighting effects. He often uses a rough sketch-drawing technique featuring surreal, funny and dark characters and often involving strong sexual overtones. The wide variety of his work, with its different moods and characters, has led to him having a truly diverse portfolio.
